    Glaze is out!

Tired of having your artwork used for AI training but find watermarks dismaying and ineffective?

Well check this out! Software that makes your Art look messed up to training AIs and unusable in a data set but nearly unchanged to human eyes.

I just learned about this. It’s in Beta. Please read all the information before using.

1/ This might be the most important oil painting I’ve made: Musa Victoriosa The first painting released to the world that utilizes Glaze, a protective tech against unethical AI/ML models, developed by the @UChicago team led by @ravenben. Art thieves already hate it:

Dude, if you’re stealing, you deserve to have the data poisoned. Because you could have asked and you didn’t.

The link is only in the original post inside an image, not as text, so here it is as plain text: https://glaze.cs.uchicago.edu/

and the paper about how it works: https://arxiv.org/abs/2302.04222

As links (because some of us are on mobile and can’t easily copy and paste to our browser), those are:

    &

A bit of a TLDR for some questions I saw in the notes:

The team that created Glaze is from the University of Chicago. Their names are each listed in full on the Glaze download website. (This group of students/professors did this for their SPRING BREAK 😱 so go give them some love lol)

It is free to download. No, they won’t ask for or raise money from/for this project.(stated by one of the lead professors of the project).

Glaze is designed to protect artists’ STYLE–which a bunch of ai people have been deliberately fine-tuning their models to mimic (and specifically of current living artists–small or big).

It currently does not protect against composition/trace-like theft (as seen when run through img-to-img) but that would be protected by copyright anyway while STYLE is not.

The University Team has stated that they are dedicated to continuing to improve the tool, like fixing bugs (like overheating older computers by taking up lots of energy when Glazing–it currently runs on CPU so they’re trying to change that to GPU, I believe) and expanding the type of protection given to artists (like working against img-to-img theft).

It currently only works directly on your computer (phones not advised due to current overheating issue, no tablets, or iPads, and no website runthrough since that would be insecure to breaches/scraping/hacks)

It currently works best on painterly artwork, but can still be used on other forms (team is working on improving this)

IT WORKS BY calculating the changes each image needs for the best protection against style theft by AI, and adds tiny changes throughout the piece, so that your style will, for example, confuse the ai into seeing van gogh. But the ai thieves will see a regular image in your style, feeding it into their model labeled as your work (thus starting the “data poisoning”).

Do not post the original unGlazed piece of your artwork after posting your Glazed version (obviously)

The Team worked directly with over 1,000 artists that were being impacted by the ai theft. Because the team listened to those artists, Glaze accounts for regular art thieves too (i.e. Glaze can’t be removed/cropped etc. like signatures or watermarks when reposted. It’s just part of the image, so even if it ends up on another site and scraped, the Glazing is still in effect)

When you run your artwork through Glaze, no information is sent back to the Team. (Aka, no scraping on their part. The app receives information from the Team (like updates) but no information from you is given to them through the app. Basically Team servers —> You and NOT Team servers <-–>You) One-way data street.

Brief misunderstanding happened over an open-source license for the front-end part of the app. (Used open-source coding for front-end, not knowing that code’s use-license states it is only for other open-source uses, not closed-source (the back-end code of the app is private to prevent counter-counter measure developments)). The Team took down the app until they replaced the front-end code with code written from scratch by the team. They are now not in violation of that open-source license since they are no longer using it. (you have 30 days to remedy a license breach once informed; they did so in 2)

The Team is currently in touch with Japanese artists to better expand the tool for use to protect their art styles

From what I understand of it, Glaze is an AI tool designed to be anti-AI (Think Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator 2: one Terminator robot vs. all the other Terminators 😂)

You can download it from their website and also contact them through email there with any questions, problems, or bugs. The website: https://glaze.cs.uchicago.edu/

I cannot stress enough to Tumblr staff that they do not need to change the site. Do not try to be like Twitter. Do not try to be like Reddit. Do not alter how this site works.

Tumblr will be the most popular social media site if they continue letting all these other sites implode

  1. Chinese Surname Ranking Analysis

    linghxr:

According to this list, these are the top 10 surnames in China as of 2020*:

    1. 李 Lǐ
    2. 王 Wáng
    3. 张 Zhāng
    4. 刘 Liú
    5. 陈 Chén
    6. 杨 Yáng
    7. 赵 Zhào
    8. 黄 Huáng
    9. 周 Zhōu
    10. 吴 Wú

I’ve seen articles like this one discussing the regional distribution of surnames. I wanted to take a look myself and compare the top surnames in different provinces/municipalities. For instance, do any locations have a top 10 list that is the same as the overall country top 10? Which surname is ranked #1 in the most locations? Let’s explore and have some fun along the way.

*The top surnames for 西藏 Tibet are not included. I believe this is because the population is vast majority Tibetan.

    1) Find how many surnames in a location’s top 10 are also in the national top 10.

    Most in common

    image

Arrows: grey = same as national rank, green = higher than national rank, red = lower than national rank
Circles: orange = in national top 10 but missing from top 10 of individual location, blue = outside national top 10

    • 四川 Sichuan - 9/10 surnames
      Missing: 赵 Zhào
      Added: 罗 Luó
    • 贵州 Guizhou - 9/10 surnames

it’s really disappointing how people’s critique of jkr starts and ends with her transphobia, and they completely ignore her blatant antisemitism, racism, homophobia, slavery apologism, sympathy for the wizard nazis, (the wizard nazi incel) snape’s redemption, the villain of fantastic beasts trying to stop the holocaust, and the new game literally being a rehash of the blood libel myth.

&her ableism, fatphobia, classism, and general naked imperialism (look at things like the “thunderbird” in fantastic beasts, or anything and everything she’s ever said or done about Scotland, for example)

This ass-hat has actually lobbied against things like “letting disabled people survive” and “the colonised nation I live in taking steps toward independence.”

Oh, and you already mentioned it, but - antisemitism, again. Cannot stress the antisemitism enough because, holy fuck she’s so antisemitic!

as a trans person this is is so important to look at and spread bc us trans people are not the only people affected, and we need to band together to spread awareness about the full extent of JKRs bigotry.

Yeah…it’s really confusing how people focus exclusively on her being transphobic when she very much did recently write a book that openly and obviously makes fun of criticisms of ableism, where a person with fibromyalgia and several others of the most hard-to-diagnose painful chronic conditions (somewhat implied to be faking) murders a poor innocent writer who is being accused of ableism. 🤨

When I was 14 I had a make a wish and a very low chance of living out the year. I asked to meet her and her response was “I don’t meet *those* children” and I hear now she has a do not contact policy from make a wish. I’m glad she’s being cancelled, at this point it’s whatever it takes for me. Hopefully all of her nastiness is revealed and she can answer for all of it.

But ye reblogging for the nice list of reasons for not giving her money.

Thinking about how I would write an adult Scooby-Doo series, because I think it can be done.

The first thing I’d do is make the characters actually be adults.  Still young, but adults, in the mid to late 20s range.  Mystery Inc. is a private detective type business that they run together.  In this universe, the supernatural/ghosts/etc are real, but not necessarily common, so when they take on a case, the culprit might be a person disguised as a monster, or it might actually be a real ghost.  The stakes can be higher; sometimes a bad guy is legitimately trying to kill them.  Sometimes the mystery they’re trying to solve is a murder.  Sometimes they actually get hurt on their cases.

Fred: the core of Fred’s character should be that he’s incredibly kind.  Like, give a stranger the shirt off his back kind.  The “Fred can’t talk to potential clients because he might take a case for free and we need to eat” kind.  He’s an honest and good person and sometimes gets himself into trouble because he assumes other people are too.  While he’s not very good at reading people or noticing ulterior motives, he’s brilliant when it comes to mechanical or engineering type stuff, so he’s the one who keeps the mystery machine running, builds their gadgets, and of course, designs the traps.

Daphne: she comes from old money, and her parents absolutely despise her life choices, to the point where they haven’t officially disowned her, but they have basically cut her off, so she doesn’t actually have access to any family money.  Growing up wealthy has granted her a variety of skills, including speaking multiple languages, horseback riding, and fencing.  She’s very into fashion and jewelry (even if she can’t afford it anymore) and has extensive knowledge of both that can occasionally provide a vital clue in a case. And even though her parents have cut her off, Daphne still has a wide network of contacts she can ask for favors sometimes, because she’s personable, and people tend to like her.  Daphne is also very emotionally intelligent, and is usually the one who can spot when someone is lying to them.

Side note - I ship Fred and Daphne, so I think I would start them off as an established couple for this universe.  Dating, engaged, married, I don’t care.  They are stupidly in love, ride or die for each other.  There’s no will they, won’t they, no worries about cheating.  They are in a healthy, happy, loving relationship, and no one (not even Daphne’s disapproving parents) are going to mess that up for them.

Velma: she is the forensics nerd who sometimes gets super excited about the wrong thing at the wrong time (”He was mummified in seconds? That’s so cool!” “Velma!  His wife is standing right there!” “Oh.  Sorry.”).  She’s not purposely insensitive, she just gets laser focused on her work and forgets to filter herself sometimes.  She’s also the one who can get so fixated on solving whatever mystery they’re working on, she’s willing to bend or maybe break laws.  Is breaking and entering really so bad?  Not if it gets them answers.

Shaggy: he is still the comic relief, but he’s the comic relief by being the only person in the group that actually has common sense.  He manages the business’s finances, he’s the only one who knows how to cook, and the others tease him for being a coward sometimes, but Shaggy maintains that if a ghost with an axe is coming for you, running is the only sensible option.  He should also have a range of random knowledge that sounds useless, but sometimes saves the day (ex ventriloquism, origami, the history of spoons, etc).

Scooby: as this is a universe where supernatural creatures exist, Scooby is an ancient eldritch type being that took a shine to Shaggy when he was a kid, and took the form of a talking dog to befriend and hang out with him.  Aside from the talking dog bit and not aging, he never uses his powers in a way that anyone notices.  The audience is not told upfront that Scooby is an ancient eldritch being; it should slowly be hinted at throughout the series so the audience put it together, but the characters never realize it.  Scooby genuinely considers Shaggy to be his best friend, and cares about the rest of the gang too.

Red Kid designs with 长命锁 are so correct. That’s exactly how much of a “my mommy and daddy love me so SOOO much” spoiled baby he should be.

    image

[ID: A photo of Red Kid from 2011 JTTW on his throne. End ID]

Look at him. Big ass bulky armor but he still has room for his “mama and baba’s xiao baobei” jewelry. This boy saw through Sun Wukong’s Bull Demon King disguise the second SWK said he “didn’t remember Red Kid’s birthday.” Iron Fan Princess and Bull Demon King spoil him so so much and that’s 100% why he’s so power-hungry at age nine.

The difference between Nezha and Red Kid is their attitude towards being eternally a child.

Nezha is the youngest child and is thus suffering from “my brothers keep treating me as the baby of the family (derogatory) and i can’t even call them out on it because they’re adults now and i’m still twelve.” Red Kid is an only child who still wears his hair baby-style instead of kid-style because he never wants his parents to stop squishing his cheeks and giving him thousands of gold in red envelopes every year.

  1. A story of college adventures.

    zevveli:

My Freshman year the college T.V. station decided to run a month-long event called “Humans Versus Zombies” or HVZ where the participating students were all issued a card with a number on it. If you were a human you were allowed to use an unmodified Nerf gun to shoot the zombies (A major problem for many participants as the routine Nerf wars on campus lead to some heavily modified guns that could shoot a flea off a dog’s back at 100 paces, eventually it was agreed that modifications that only affected reload time was acceptable but modifications to muzzle velocity was not, freaking tech schools, but I digress) and when the zombies were shot they were “out” until they left “line of sight.” If a zombie caught you, then you became a zombie. The zombie would take your card and register their kill online, if a kill was not registered in 48 hours, you died. Now here’s where it gets weird.

One student who was selected to be one of the initial zombies happened to be a parkour enthusiast. In the 2 weeks leading up to the start of the event he took to following people around, making notes of their routes, and figuring out where to lay ambushes. When the event started he began to begin his attacks. He leapt out of trees, suddenly burst from corners and low walls to strike at his “prey” and generally took down the “human” population of the campus.

Now as the zombie population “grew” the humans who remained were exceedingly cautious. Never using the same route twice, only leaving “safe havens” when necessary. Insisting that non-participants not talk to them between classes, etc. Now obviously this made it harder for the less fit zombies (Again, tech school) to get their necessary feeds to live. So the more fit zombies began to set up ambush parties. Large herds of zombies would come charging out at survivors, funneling them into the waiting arms of a zombie who could not hunt himself. They began to plot and plan, figuring out the next target and generally showing to some people just how terrifying an intelligent zombie apocalypse could be. Eventually the zombie menace was curbed by a simple weapon that you would never see in a movie.

The lead zombie’s girlfriend at the time, a non-participant, was feeling neglected and made him stop obsessing over the game in order to spend more time with her. Had she not done that I doubt any of the humans participating would have survived.

Now here’s where it gets even weirder:

As I said this was a tech school, the professors were actively doing research. Now one of the professors in the biology department was listening to the students discussing the events and what all had happened. She decided to ask the campus T.V. station for the records of who was turned and when, then she took that list of students to the registrar’s office and pulled their class schedules and residence locations. From there she was able to model the “outbreak” and the changes in the mentality of the hunting species as the amount of available prey decreased.

She used it as an example in her upper level classes. The next year, there were professors participating in HVZ, and studying the numbers, and modeling the information. I’m fairly certain that they wound up eventually publishing a paper about it.
